Lady Spartans claim area championship
Centennial senior distance runner Sarah Trammel will be busy at the upcoming Class 5A Region I track and field championships.
Trammel qualified to compete in three events at regionals after winning three events at the District 5-5A/6-4A track and field championships Thursday at BISD Stadium. The senior will run in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters.
The top four finishers in each event at the area meet qualified for the regional meet which will take place Friday and Saturday at Texas Tech’s PlainsCapital Park-Lowrey Field.
Thanks in part to Trammel’s efforts, the Lady Spartans won the meet title scoring 147 points to outdistance 5-5A rival Mansfield Legacy by 10 points. Fort Worth Wyatt finished third (71 points).
Mansfield Timberview scored 171 points to win the boys title. Legacy was second (136 points) and Centennial placed third (88).
Centennial had a big day qualifying athletes for regionals. The Lady Spartans qualified seven competitors in eight individual events and all three relay teams. The Spartans will have two relay teams and six individuals competing in seven individual events at regionals.
Lady Spartans qualifying for the regional meet were Trammel (800, 1,600, 3,200), Savoria Anderson (long jump, triple jump), Jaelyn Tucker (100), Kendahl Tucker (400), Vantashia Bond (3,200), Kertisa Amos (high jump) and Toni Howard (triple jump). The girls also qualified their 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams.
Headed to regionals for the Spartans are Nick Newby (800, 1,600), Jaylon Jackson (100), Corey Price (110 hurdles), Trevor Suggs (shot put), Randon Gray (pole vault) and Nas Marshall (triple jump). The boys 800 relay and 1,600 relay teams will also be competing at regionals.
