Lady Spartans claim Bronze championship

A slow start in pool play at the Mansfield ISD Tournament didn’t carryover on Saturday for Centennial’s volleyball team.

The Lady Spartans swept their way through three opponents on Saturday to claim the Bronze Bracket title.

Centennial defeated Euless Trinity, 26-24, 25-15, in the title match.

“I saw some good things and some things we need to work on but that’s what pre-season is for,” Centennial coach Julie Williams said. “We are trying to get as many kids playing time in the pre-season just to see what combinations work.”

Junior Bella Russell earned all-tournament honors for the Lady Spartans. With senior setter Nadia Romancelly sick on Saturday, Russell, a right-side hitter, took over at setter. Centennial ran a 6-2 in the first match Saturday with senior Avery Tomme also playing setter. In the last two matches, Russell was the lone setter in a 5-1 attack.

“Bella stepped up and set well on Saturday,” Williams said.

Senior outside hitters Molly McCalla and Kaytlin Moore drews nods from Williams for their play at the tournament.

The Lady Spartans reached the title match with wins over Arlington Sam Houston, 25-16, 20-25, 27-25, and Tyler Lee, 25-16, 20-25, 27-25, in the semifinals.

“There were several times during the weekend when we really turned it on and played well,” Williams said. “We played well in the L.D. Bell and we should have won the game against El Paso Chapin.”

The squad had pool play on Thursday and Friday and went 1-2 each day.

Thursday, the Lady Spartans downed Sam Houston, 25-11, 25-13 and lost to Coppell 25-15. 25-16 and El Paso Chapin, 25-15, 15-25, 25-17.

On Friday, Centennial beat White Settlement Brewer 25-20, 22-25, 25-14 and fell to Hurst L.D. Bell, 25-22, 30-28 and Mansfield Timberview, 26-24, 25-22, 26-24.
Centennial (5-5) fell to Euless Trinity Tuesday night, 25-20, 25-14, 25-17.

The Lady Spartans open play today at the Granbury Tournament with pool play matches against Amarillo Tascosa, Birdville and Sherman. Play continues through Saturday. Centennial plays Tuesday at Godley.
