Lady Spartans claim consolation championship
Centennial’s volleyball team brought of hardware Granbury Classic over the weekend after winning the Bronze Division consolation championship.
“We had a successful Saturday, so that was good,” Centennial coach Jessica Ransom said. “We were able to win a few in a row.”
The Lady Spartans took the title with wins over Valley Mills, 25-23, 25-9 and Granbury’s junior varsity, 25-20, 25-23.
“I saw a lot of good things,” Ransom said “We just have to put more of that together at once. We are still in that peak and valley phase. On the last day we took control of the game instead of falling behind early. We were able to control the pace of play.”
After two weeks of play, Ransom is still seeking more consistency.
Junior middle blocker Zassmine Birdwell was named to the all-tournament team. Ransom said the honor should give Birdwell confidence after taking over offensively and defensively at the net.
“She really stepped up her blocking game,” Ransom said. “She was not just getting stuff blocks but getting touches on balls that slowed them down for our defense. She took her play at the net on offense and defense to another level.”
Ransom also praised the play of senior middle blocker Allison Nolan.
“She is very consistent and takes care of the ball when we need her too,” Ransom said. “She is always working hard in practice and in the games.”
Today, the Lady Spartans open play at the Arlington Showcase. Ransom said the tournament should be good for her team since with the format being best-of-five.
“I think that will help with consistency,” Ransom said. “Hopefully we will find a way to come out on top in the longer matches.”
The Lady Spartans have pool play games Friday against Arlington Lamar, Mansfield Timberview and Lake Worth.
Tuesday night, Centennial fell at home to Keller Central, 25-17, 25-19, 16-25, 25-22. The Lady Spartans play Tuesday at White Settlement Brewer and Sept. 1 host Grandview.
