Lady Spartans open season fast

The home run played a big role in Centennial’s softball teams fast start over the weekend at the Black-N-Blue Tournament. Centennial went 5-1 in its first action of the season, losing only to tournament champion Plano West.

“I’m very happy with the way we played this weekend,” Centennial coach Shannon Sullivan said. “Our pitchers did a great job and hitters gave them ample run support averaging nearly 11 runs per game. Team batting average on the weekend was a .512. We will work this week on executing a few game strategies that we will need to be more proficient at in order to reach our season goals.

“Our loss to a very talented Plano West was disappointing, but failure is the best teacher, Losses early in the season are all a part of the whole process. We will learn from them and get better as a team because of them.”

The Lady Spartans hit eight home runs in a pair of wins on Thursday as they outscored their opponents, 34-0. Centennial defeated Carrollton Newman Smith, 19-0, and Grand Prairie, 15-0.

In the win over Newman Smith, Morton, Ellison, Hill and Kimberling each hit home runs. Kimberling had five RBIs. Ellison had three RBI and a double. Morton also tripled and drove in two runs. Hill collected a pair of RBIs.

Green tossed three shutout innings allowing two runs and striking out six.

Centennial had 15 hits in the win over Grand Prairie. Mackenzie Law belted a grand slam in the game. Also hitting home runs were Marley Eller and Laney Vaughn. Marley Eller and Law each had four RBI. Vaughn drove in three runs and Morton tripled and had two RBIs. Marley Eller, Mac Harshbarger and Ashley Brookman each hit doubles.

Peebles allowed two hits and struck out four over three innings.

Trailing 8-1 Friday, the Lady Spartans rallied to defeat Trophy Club Byron Nelson, 12-10. Ellison doubled twice and drove in four runs and Morton had a double and drove in three runs. Law had a pair of doubles and two RBI and Marley Eller tripled.

Later on Friday, Centennial beat Grandview in eight innings, 4-3, on a walk-off hit by Marley Eller that scored Carley Eller.

Marley Eller drove in three runs in the win. Karter Hill doubled in a run. Morton, Kimberling and Harshburger each doubled.

Peebles allowed two runs over six innings and Murrell surrendered one run in two innings to get the win.

Saturday, Centennial topped Ennis, 14-3, as Green and Peebles combined for the victory. Green allowed three runs in two innings and Peebles tossed three scoreless innings.

Morton had a big game with a home run and a triple. Ellison and Law tripled while Marley Eller, Sydney Friend and Carley Eller doubled. Law had three RBI and Friend, Marley Eller, Ellison and Carley Eller drove in two runs.

Plano West downed the Lady Spartans, 7-0, in their tournament finale. Morton finished with two hits and Kimberling had a hit.

“We left plenty of room for improvement in some areas, but we showed a lot of character when coming back to win against Byron Nelson and coming out on top of a close extra-inning game with Grandview,” Sullivan said.

The Lady Spartans open play today at the Wylie Tournament and return to district play Tuesday at Arlington Seguin.
