Lady Spartans fall in copper title match
Centennial’s first volleyball tournament of the season ended with the Lady Spartans finishing second in the copper bracket at the ASC NIKE and Denton Ryan Classic in Carrollton over the weekend.
After going 1-3 in pool play the Lady Spartans won their first two matches in Saturday’s bracket play. Centennial (4-5) defeated Haltom, 25-22, 25-16, and Frisco Lone Star, 25-9, 21-25, 25-13. The Lady Spartans then lost to Fort Worth Paschal in the copper division title match, 25-20, 23-25, 25-12.
In pool play Friday, Centennial defeated Justin Eaton, 25-21, 25-18, but lost to Denton Ryan (21-25, 25-20, 25-13), Frisco Independence (25-11, 25-12) and Dallas Woodrow Wilson, 25-14, 25-16.
“Friday, I saw some really good things and then I also saw some things that we need to focus on in practice,” Centennial coach Jessica Ransom said. “Saturday we picked it up all over the court and played much better.”
Ransom had praise for the play of senior right side hitter Haley Kimberling and senior libero Jeanette McGrath.
“Haley Kimberling was our most consistent at the tournament,” said Ransom of the lefty who finished wit 13 kills for the weekend. “We were happy to see that.”
McGrath has grabbed the libero jersey and not given it up. The senior has 122 digs so far to go along with 99 assists and eight aces.
“She was also very consistent,” Ransom said. “I’m the kind of coach where you have to earn your position week to week. I’m pleased with her play at libero. She hustles all over the court.”
The Lady Spartans dropped a tough non-district home match Tuesday to South Grand Prairie, 25-20, 25-10, 23-25, 18-25, 15-7.
Centennial begins play at the Granbury Tournament Thursday with matches against Lubbock Estacado (2 p.m.), Sherman (4 p.m.) and Keller Central (6 p.m.). There will be one cross over match on Friday before starting bracket play on Saturday.
Also on Friday, Centennial has a home match at 6:30 p.m. against Birdville. The Lady Spartans play Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Keller Central.
