Lady Spartans fall at home
The first game of 2017 started slowly for Centennial’s girls basketball team and the slow start cost the Lady Spartans. Centennial’s 14 first-quarter possessions resulted in six points and a 14-6 hole that the Lady Spartans couldn’t dig themselves out of as they fell to Cleburne, 54-41, in a District 9-5A game. The loss dropped Centennial to 2-2 in district play. Cleburne is 3-1. The Lady Spartans will try to snap a two-game 9-5A losing streak Friday at Arlington Seguin. Centennial hosts Burleson Tuesday. “Cleburne had an excellent night and we never got into the flow of the game,” Centennial coach Valerie Wootan said. “We have to have a short memory and set our focus on Seguin Friday.” The Lady Spartans had no answer for Cleburne’s Akarian Morgan. The senior guard scored a game-high 21 points. No other Lady Yellowjacket hit double-figure scoring. Kelsi Chavez and Chloe Scott each scored nine points and Skalia White finished with eight points. Centennial hung with Cleburne in the final three quarters but couldn’t make a dent in the Lady Jackets’ initial eight-point first-quarter advantage. Senior guard Karly Burson paced the Lady Spartans with 10 points. Sophomore guard Addy Mize added nine points while senior guard Bree Gustin scored eight points.
