Lady Spartans place third at Birdville Tournament
In their final test before the start of District 9-5A girls soccer play, Centennial’s Lady Spartans finished third at the Johnny Baggett Memorial “Kick-off” Classic hosted by Birdville High School.
“Overall, I was pleased with our play,” Centennial coach Kara Cuellar said. “We played against some very aggressive and talented teams. My girls fought hard to get third place and I am very proud of them. I saw a lot of character and heart from my girls this weekend. My forwards looked great, midfield was effective and my defense was solid throughout the tourney.”
The Lady Spartans took third-place thanks to a 4-2 shootout victory over Irving Nimitz Saturday. Ashley Galupi scored Centennial’s lone goal in regulation off a free kick.
Scoring goals in the shootout were Madison Pewitt, Casie Watson, Galupi and Megan Walker.
“Caitlin Thomasson did outstanding in the shootout, blocking the first shot which I think kept our momentum going in the shootout,” Cuellar said. “My girls said they have never wanted a third place trophy so bad in their life. We earned it. We are a little banged up and tired so we will have a light practice Monday and start preparing for our first district game this Friday against Crowley.”
Earlier on Saturday, Birdville topped Centennial, 2-1. The Lady Spartans goal came from Cassie Watson off an assist from Madison Collier.
Friday, Centennial tied Fort Worth South Hills, 1-1, thanks to a goal by Mackenzie Southall in the final minute. Megan Walker registered the assist for the Lady Spartans. Centennial won a forfeit in its opener Friday when Euless Trinity didn’t show up for a 7:30 a.m. match.
The Lady Spartans started the tournament with a 5-0 victory over Justin Northwest. Avery Shutter had a hat trick in the win. Hannah Walker and Pewitt also scored goals. Madi Gilbert had a pair of assists while Galupi, Apolonia Wright and Gracie Mattinson each picked up assists.
Centennial begins district play Friday hosting Crowley. The Lady Spartans play Tuesday at Cleburne.
