Lady Spartans like playing at home

Playing at home Tuesday night seemed to be an excellent elixir for Centennial’s volleyball team.

The Lady Spartans playing at home for the first time this season defeated White Settlement Brewer, 25-20, 25-23, 14-25, 26-24, to snap a nine-match losing streak.

“I’m so glad to be back at home,” Centennial coach Julie Williams said. “It’s absolutely a wonderful atmosphere here. Our student body does a good job of supporting us. I’m glad we got the win.”

After reeling off consecutive wins, a long delay by the referees before the start of the third game seemed to steal the Lady Spartans (5-14) momentum.Brewer took the third game in quick fashion.

With things tied at 6-6 in the fourth game, senior Nadia Romancelly toed the service line and helped the Lady Spartans reel off six consecutive points for a 12-6 lead. Centennial pushed its advantage to 19-15 but Brewer chipped away tying the game at 19-19.

The Lady Bears took a 24-23 only to see the Lady Spartans pull out the win 26-24 to take the match.

“I was very proud of the girls and the way they played tonight,” Williams said. “They fought hard. The game we lost they just had too many unforced errors. If we can control our errors we are definitely a good team.”

Over the weekend, the Lady Spartans lost four matches at the Arlington Invitational.

Centennial fell to South Grand Prairie (25-20, 25-18, 25-16), Irving MacArthur (21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 28-26, 15-8), Arlington Martin (25-11, 25-16, 25-8) and Saginaw Chisholm Trail (25-11, 25-11, 25-23).

Centennial plays at Midlothian Heritage Friday in its final non-district match.
