Lady Spartans reach silver title match
Going into last weekend’s Granbury Tournament, Centennial’s volleyball team had an overall goal of turning in more consistent play. The Lady Spartans achieved that goal.
“I think we showed tremendous improvement,” Centennial coach Jessica Ransom said. “We were way more consistent compared to last weekend and looked better. I think the girls are more comfortable playing beside each other. All across the board we were more consistent.”
The Lady Spartans (10-9) went 3-3 in pool play matches placing them in the silver bracket for play on Saturday.
To go along with tournament goals, Centennial also set a daily goal. Saturday’s goal was to the reach the title match of the silver bracket.
Before falling to Mansfield Timberview, 25-22, 25-13, Centennial topped Sherman, 25-13, 25-20, and Midland Lee, 25-21, 25-12 to get to the title tilt.
“Even though we didn’t win the bracket, the girls were excited to do well,” Ransom said. “I’m happy with the way we are moving forward and progressing.”
Although she never was told who made the all-tournament team, Ransom felt sure that senior middle blocker Marissa Thompson made the list. The senior middle blocker has been a solid performer in the first two weeks of the season.
Ransom also praised the play of three seniors – middle blocker Laken Cash, right-side hitter Haley Kimberling and setter Jeanette McGrath.
“Laken played the best all weekend and stood out,” Ransom said. “Haley Kimberling is really holding her own and Jeanette McGrath played well at libero.”
Centennial opened the tournament last Thursday with wins over Lubbock Estacado (25-5, 25-6) and Sherman (22-25, 25-22, 25-19) and a loss to Keller Central (25-15, 29-27). Friday, the Lady Spartans beat Lubbock (25-16, 25-18) and fell to Peaster (25-14, 25-14) and Hurst L.D. Bell (26-28, 25-20, 25-10).
Tuesday night, Centennial dropped a non-district match at Keller Central, 25-23, 25-10, 25-20.
Centennial opens play at the Arlington ISD Classic Friday against Keller Timber Creek. The Lady Spartans host White Settlement Brewer Tuesday.
