Lady Spartans start fast in 9-5A
Centennial’s volleyball team got off to a fast start in District 9-5A play with home wins over Everman and Cleburne.
The Lady Spartans downed Everman, 26-28, 25-20, 25-23, 25-22, Friday night and followed that up with a 25-22, 25-21, 26-24, win Tuesday night over Cleburne.
“Overall, I’m very proud how we have started in district,” Centennial coach Jessica Ransom said. “Both of the wins are over very solid teams.”
Tuesday night, Ransom said the Lady Spartans (11-18, 2-0) played their roles well Tuesday night in their win over the Lady Yellow Jackets.
“Today we took care of business,” Ransom said. “There were a couple of runs that they went on where we just made error after error. We are going to need to keep working on our consistency.”
Against Everman, the night belonged to middle blockers Zassmine Birdwell and Allison Nolan.
Birdwell, a junior, stood toe-to-toe with Everman’s 6-foot-2 middle blocker Adedo Manyang while Nolan had 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .600.
“I was very pleased with the way we played on Friday,” Ransom said. “We came out with a lot of intensity. We took care of the ball. We earned so many of our points, that has been something we have been focusing on.”
The Lady Spartans three-match home stand gets a little tougher Friday when they host Granbury. Centennial’s first 9-5A road game is Tuesday at Arlington Seguin.
