Lady Spartans wrap up playoff berth with sweep
After surviving a road scare Friday night, Centennial’s volleyball team wasn’t going to let that happen Tuesday night in a District 9-5A match at Joshua.
The Lady Spartans took care of business sweeping the Lady Owls, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23. The victory helped Centennial wrap up a post-season berth with four matches to play.
Centennial (20-16, 8-2) sits third in the district a game ahead of Burleson and a game behind Granbury and Cleburne, which are tied for first.
The Lady Spartans host Burleson Friday and play their final home match Tuesday against Crowley. Centennial closes out district play with matches at Granbury and Cleburne.
“We just have to come out and compete the rest of the way,” Centennial coach Jessica Ransom said.
Some of the biggest blows struck at Joshua came from freshman defensive specialist Casey Hendrixson, who Ransom said at the start of the season that Hendrixson had “high volleyball IQ.”
Hendrixson registered five aces including the match-winning ace.
Senior middle blockers Laken Cash and Marissa Thompson had another big night for the Lady Spartans according to Ransom.
“Tonight our setters did a good job of delivering balls to our middles so they could get good swings,” Ransom said.
The victory came on the heels of a 25-20, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-8 win at Seguin Friday.
“Seguin came ready to play,” Ransom said. “We went into the game a little unprepared. We had to put the pieces together and figure out how to put everything together for a win. It was a battle for the win."
