Pack mentality pays off for Centennial at first meet

Even though there were plenty of new faces running with the varsity, Centennial’s cross country teams opened the season with a bang at Saturday’s Waxahachie Woodhouse Invitational.

Both squads were the first Class 5A teams to cross the finish line.

The Lady Spartans tallied 136 points to finish third. Mansfield was first with 53 points and Coppell placed second (57 points). The Spartans were fourth with 136 points. Coppell’s White team took the title with 34 points. Coppell Black finished second (55 points) and Richland was fourth (136).

“I saw some promise on both sides from our kids,” Centennial coach Sarah Eden said. “I’m proud of all of them. It’s still wide open as far as who will be on the varsity. We ran 10 on the varsity and will do it again this week.”

Centennial competes Saturday at the Elk Run 16 at Chisenhall Fields.

Leading the way for the boys and girls were Trenton Kelly and Sarah Trammel. Kelly finished fourth in a time of 16 minutes, 27.1 seconds. Trammel clocked a time of 19.31.90 to place seventh.

“Sarah and Trenton ran well,” Eden said.

The other Lady Spartans showed a great pack mentality after Abigail McCandless finished 15th in a time of 20:28.60. Leading a pack of six runners was Serena Bersuch (40th, 21:19.80) Following right behind were Emily Terrell (46th, 21:39.00), Karly Burson (49th, 21:41.50), Vantashia Bond (51st, 21:46.50), Jordan Lamond (54th, 22:00.80), Kayla Whitmire (59th, 22:11.60). Savannah Becton placed 72nd in a time of 22:56.40 and Rainey Southall was 89th (23:38.80).

That same pack mentality was on display as the boys behind Kelly finished in a four-man pack within 15 places of each other. Running in the pack were Trevor Pennington (23rd, 17:48.9), Kolton Makarwich (35th, 18:14.1), Jordan Pennington (36th, 18:15.4) and Nick Newby (38th, 18:17.7).

Also running for the Spartans were Reed Vernon (52nd, 18:33.4), Amir Kahn (57th, 18:43.6), Chris Vardy (74th, 18.59.4), Derek Larabell (79th, 19:07.3) and Ryan Valdez (85th, 19:24.7).
