Spartans fall to Brewer in triple overtime, 41-35
The string finally ran out on Centennial Friday night in third overtime.
After scoring in of the first two overtimes, the Spartans couldn’t get the job done as they lost to White Settlement Brewer, 41-35, at Brewer Bear Stadium.
Spartan senior slot back Kelton Tezeno scored twice in overtime on runs of 25 and 11 yards. But in the third overtime, Centennial couldn’t move the ball. Facing a fourth-and-22, Kyle Burns last-ditch heave down the field was intercepted.
Brewer (2-1) struggle on its possession but was able to overcome a third-and-16 with 17-yard game-winning scoring toss from Carson Ingram to Jahard Taylor. It was the second overtime scoring strike to Taylor.
The Bears other overtime score was a 19-yard run by Christian Calton.
Ingram completed 16 of 27 passes for 163 yards and three scores. Calton carried 21 times for 126 yards and three scores.
Tezeno had a big night for Spartans (1-2). The senior ran for three scores while carrying 12 times for 186 yards.
Brewer lead 14-7 at halftime as the Bears scored on a 15-yard run by Calton and a 14-yard pass from Ingram to Jaidyn Cartwright.
After scoring on its first possession, Centennial struggled the rest of the first half. Tezeno tied the game on a 37-yard run, things soured after that.
The next possessions resulted in a three-and-out, a fumbled and missed 24-yard field goal as time expired. The Spartans’ final drive of the first half reached the Brewer 1 with one second to play. Centennial lined up to go for a possible game-tying score but after a delay of game penalty, the Spartans opted for a field goal. The kick hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play.
Centennial came out firing offensively in the second half turning to its outside running game for big yards.
The Spartans tied the game at 14-14 with 5:12 to play in the third quarter on 5-yard run by Burns. The run capped a 13-play, 75-yard drive. Centennial followed that with an 8-play, 80-yard drive to take the lead at 21-14. After Burns completed a 43-pass to Wellington Bridges on third-and 12, he found the end zone three plays later on a 1-yard run.
Brewer answered with a 13-play, 81-yard drive to tie the game with 5:11 to play when Calton scored on a 1-yard run.
Centennial’s next two possessions tallied 15 yards in eight plays and ended with punts. Brewer couldn’t move the ball either and the game ended regulation play tied at 21-21.
The Spartans have the week off before opening District 9-5A play Sept. 29 at home against Crowley.
