Spartans’ Eagle returning to state championships

As a freshman last season, Zach Eagle made history becoming the first athlete from Centennial to qualify for the state championships.

Saturday, Eagle turned in a historic swim in the 100-yard butterfly. The sophomore became the first Spartan swimmer to win an event at regional championship. Eagle clocked a time of 51.56 seconds to win.

Eagle will complete in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke at the UIL Class 5A swimming and diving championships Feb. 18-19 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus the University of Texas in Austin.

Eagle received a call-up in the 100 backstroke after finishing third in a time of 55.34.

“Zack qualifying for his second state meet is an awesome accomplishment,” Centennial coach Jeremy Martin said. “We had a ton of firsts for Spartan swimming - a regional champion and three medalists. What an exciting meet.”

Junior Lindy Spann also medaled for the Spartans on Saturday. Spann placed third in the 50 freestyle in a time of 22.80 and finished 13th in the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.58.

“Lindy surprised all of us with his third place finish,” Martin said.

The Spartans finished fourth with 132 points. Mansfield Lake Ridge won the title with 369 points. The Lady Spartans placed 16th with 29 points. Prosper took first place with 316 points.

“We swam really well on Saturday,” Martin said. “I’m proud of our performance this year. We finished higher than we have ever finished. I will take a top four finish any day of the week.”

The Spartans swam on Saturday in three individual events.

In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Harrison Martin placed 11th in a time of 1:10.03 and Brendan Smith was 12th in a time of  1:10.99. Senior Garrison Guidry finished 13th in the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:02.28. In the 500 freestyle, sophomore Ryan Russell placed 14th in a time of 5:53.59.

The boys advanced two relay teams to the “A” finals.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Eagle, Guidry, Smith and Spann finished fourth in a time of 1:32.67. The team of Eagle, Smith, Martin and Spann placed fifth in a time of 1:44.69.

Five Spartans competed Friday but did not make their way out of the prelims.

In the 200 individual medley, Smith placed 17th in a time 2:22.20 and Martin was 18th in a time of 2:24.63. May placed 18th in the 500 freestyle in a time of 6:17.21. Guidry finished 18th in the 100 backstroke in a time 1:03.92. In the 50 freestyle, sophomore Matthew May placed 20th in a time 24.98 and senior Cade Schreiner was 22nd in a time 25.41. Schreiner finished 22nd in the 100 freestyle in a time of 57.05.

The Lady Spartan relay teams swam in three “B” finals on Saturday.

The team of Tessa Steward, sophomore Abbie Qualls, Seleca Steward and sophomore Taylor English finished 12th in the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:08.74. In the 200 freestyle relay, Tessa Steward, English, Quall and Seleca Steward placed 13th in a time of 1:55.08. The team of Qualls, freshman Elaina Chasteen, English and Seleca Steward finished 13th in a time of 4:23.50.

Tessa Steward competed in the “B” final in the 100 backstroke finishing 14th in a time of 1:10.16. Tessa Steward placed 22nd in the 100 freestyle preliminaries in a time of 1:05.61. In the prelims of the 100 butterfly, Seleca Steward was 18th in a time of 1:15.33.
