Spartans Chatman finishes fifth at regional wrestling meet
Over the weekend, Centennial’s wrestling team competed at the Region II Wrestling Championships at Frisco Wakeland High School. The Spartans scored 20 points to finish in 24th place.
At 138 pounds, Alonzo Chatman finished fifth at regionals. Chatman won by fall at 2:21 over Frisco Lone Star’s Zach Gecker in the opening round before losing to Northwest Eaton’s Ty Nicholson by fall in the second round.
Chatman beat Grapevine’s Javier Cervera by fall to reach the quarterfinals. He won a 7-6 decision over Midlothian’s Jackson Carter. In the consolation semifinals, Chatman lost to Frisco’s Lucas Brennan, 1-0.
Facing Nicholson a second time, Chatman won 6-3 then lose to Brenam to finish fifth.
Angel Simien lost to Frisco Centennial’s Baylor Steward in the championship quarterfinals by fall at 2:56. Simien then lost to Dallas Kimball’s Rene Trevino by major decision, 14-4.
Travis Hillard, wrestling at 170 pounds, opened the tournament with a loss to Saginaw Chisholm Trail’s Dillon Thomas by fall at 0:48. After winning a forfeit, Hillard lost by fall at 2:11 in the consolation quarterfinals to Saginaw’s Justin Jones.
Blake Murphy reached the 182 pound consolation quarterfinals where he lost to Birdville’s Colton Brandt by fall at 3:49. Murphy opened competition with a 13-4 major decision loss to Frisco Centennial’s Wyatt Hardesty. The junior defeated Dallas Hillcrest’s Wyatt Hardesty by fall at 3:21.
At 113 pounds, Jason Seginak lost to Dallas Kimball’s Andrick Williams by fall at 3:23 in the first round then was defeated by Northwest Eaton’s Anthony Shaw by fall at 1:32.
Ethan Dilleshaw, wrestling at 120 pounds, lost to Frisco Heritage’s Manual Rangle by fall 0:41 and then dropped a major decision to Dallas Madison’s Jurriod Hollie, 13-4.
