Spartans claim Elk Run title
Running in Burleson seems to be something Centennial’s cross country teams like to do.
The Spartans and Lady Spartans had big efforts Friday at the Elk Run XIX at Chisenhall Fields.
Racing in the boys Class 5A division, Centennial tallied 64 points to win the title. Burleson was second with 106 points and Colleyville Heritage was third (167 points).
The Lady Spartans finished second with 132 points. Heritage scored 48 points to take first place. Northwest Eaton was third with 153 points.
“It’s a long season,” Centennial coach Sarah Eden said. “We are just getting started. I’m impressed with my young kids and really excited about the leadership on the boys' side.”
Senior Nick Newby led the Spartans, finishing second in a time of 16 minutes, 16.81 seconds. Also placing in the top 10 was senior Trevor Pennington, who was 10th in a time of 16:16.81. Others scoring points for Centennial were sophomore Hayden Whitehead (15th, 17:19.03), senior Ryan Bergami (18th, 17:21.18) and sophomore Luke Johnson (19th,17:24.32).
Others running for the Spartans were senior Andy Shue (32nd, 17:50.65), sophomore Rocco Lombardo (46th, 18:08.45), senior Chris Pena (63rd, 18:30.48), sophomore Dakota Larabell (72nd, 18:37.07), and senior Travis Clark (76th,18:40.96) The first Lady Spartan to finish was junior Harli Woolsey who placed 19th in a time of 20:42.81. Senior Vantashia Bond was 25th in a time of 20:56.41. Senior Caitlyn Cron finished 29th in a time of 21:02.60. Senior Ashley Campbell placed 30th in a time of 21:03.90.
Junior Madylin Herrera was 41st in a time of 21:20.46. Senior Marina Grimaldo placed 46th in a time of 21:24.26 and sophomore Kate Moravec was 60th in a time of 21:40.12.
The Spartans and Lady Spartans run Saturday at the Carroll Invitational in Southlake.
