Spartans first scrimmage a success

Centennial started its second week of spring football workouts on Monday. Here’s a look into how things are going for the Spartans.

Centennial held its first scrimmage Friday and coach Kyle Geller was pleased with what he saw from his team.

“We did a lot of good things but we also had a ton of things to correct,” Geller said. “We have a ways to go like most folks but we will get there. We still have a ways to go.”

The Spartans will get a boost with the return of linebacker Ethan Diaz and safety Zavier Fuller from baseball. Both of those positions have openings.

Diaz will take over at strong-side linebacker. Diaz was a starter last season before suffering an injury. A new candidate at linebacker is former tailback Darrell Williams.

“We are trying to see who will step up at linebacker,” Geller said. “We get Ethan Diaz back this week which is nice. He’s a big cog at linebacker. His return will allow us some flexibility at other positions. Having Fuller back will be helpful.”

The Spartans did lose a few defensive linemen  but thanks to the amount of players that rotated up front last season there is a lot of experience coming back.

Geller said that offensively it’s all about keeping the ball off the ground. The Spartans are also trying a few new wrinkles here and there.

With Williams moving to linebacker there are some fresh faces at tailback.

Returning at tailback is Jeff Kirven. Also getting reps at tailback are Ryan Mullins, Zion Abaeio, Ronnell Young Jr. and Matt Futrell.

The Spartans have two solid contributors returning at slot back in Chris Mosley and Jaylen Jackson.

“Those two guys are really solid, they are fast and do good things with the football,” Geller said. “Now we just need to find some depth to play behind them.”

Centennial has several candidates at quarterbacks. David Robinson and Hank Meyer saw action in the scrimmage with Kyle Burns still mending from an ACL injury.

“Burns practices everyday except but does participate in scrimmages,” Geller said. “He can do anything other than get hit.”

The Spartans will hold their spring game Thursday at 6 p.m. Centennial starts its season Aug. 31 at Corsicana.
