Spartans get offensive in second half to win

CLEBURNE - Trailing 21-17 at halftime, Centennial was able to turn things around in the second half, scoring 36 points to help the Spartans collect their first District 9-5A victory with a 53-28 win over Cleburne Friday at Yellow Jacket Stadium.

The Spartans (2-3, 1-1) scored 22 third-quarter points to overcome the Yellow Jackets (0-5, 0-2) four-point halftime led. Centennial hosts Arlington Seguin Friday.

“We just made some adjustments at halftime,” Centennial coach Kyle Geller said. “Our defense made the most adjustments. I’m happy to get our first district win.”

Centennial turned the ball over five times Friday, but still found a way to win in what could easily be described as an ugly game. The teams combined for 186 yards in penalties.

“Kids came out and did a good job,” Geller said. “We fought through adversity in the first half. I told our kids just because they are 0-4, don’t expect it to be easy. They practice too and they have some good players.”

In the third quarter, Centennial quarterback Kyle Burns threw for one score and ran for two more.

Burns threw a 43-yard touchdown to Kelton Tezeno to give the Spartans a 24-21 lead. He also scored on second-half runs of 19 and 11 yards. Chris Moseley accounted for another third-quarter score with a 30-yard run. The Spartans final score came on a one-yard run by Hunter Prescher.

Burns finished the night completing six-of-eight passes for 128 yards and a pair of scores. In the first quarter, Burns connected with Tezeno for a 26-yard score. Tezeno also scored on a seven-yard run in the second quarter.

Tezeno carried seven times for 89 yards while Mosely ran for 74 yards on five carries. Burns carried 13 times for 71 yards.

“I thought they were going to try and make the quarterback keep it all night, but they were making him pitch which is fine with us,” Geller said.

The Spartans defense forced a pair of turnovers and stymied the Jackets’ offense in the second half. After scoring 21 first-half points, Cleburne was held to seven points in the second half.

Cleburne quarterback Carson Gann had a good night throwing three touchdown passes. Gann hit Jamari Bradley for scores of 14 and 18 yards and Da’Quan Cius for a nine-yard score. Jacobe Peet added the Jackets’ other score on a three-yard run.

Gann completed 11 of 24 passes for 164 yards and three scores. Bradley caught three passes for 57 yards and two scores. Peet carried 20 times for 118 yards and a touchdown.
