Spartans give best effort of season

Fort Worth programs gave Centennial’s boys soccer team three stiff tests over the weekend at the Brewer Bear Cave Classic.

The Spartans (2-2-2) lost twice and played to a tie in its other game.

“We just need to find a way to finish things up top,” Centennial coach Brian Boydstun said. “If things start clicking for us up top, I think we will start seeing some good results. Our defense is playing well and not allowing many goals.”

Saturday, Boydstun said the Spartans played their best game of the season against the top opponent they had so in the season. Centennial fell to Fort Worth O.D. Wyatt, 3-2, in the game. Akwasi Agyei scored the Spartans first goal off an assist from Casey Wright and Corin Seale scored with the assist going to Owen Walker.

The Spartans lost to Fort Worth Paschal, 1-0, Thursday and then tied Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis, 1-1, later in the day. The Eagles won the match in a shootout. Wright scored the Spartans lone goal of the day.

Tuesday night, the Spartans opened what Boydstun termed their regular season with 1-0 win over Aledo. Freshman Mason McBeath score the game-winner.

“It’s nice to start playing on full-sized fields,” Boydstun said. “I see all these tournament games as glorified scrimmages. The tournament games were good for me to figure out which guys can do what. I think I have a good idea now where guys are at.”
