Spartans open second half of district play with pair of losses
After exchanging two runs each in the first innings Centennial and Crowley failed to light up the scoreboard until the seventh inning when Crowley scored a run to defeat the Spartans, 3-2, Friday night in a District 9-5A baseball at Centennial.
Crowley’s Abe Limon picked up the complete game win allowing eight hits and two runs. He fanned three and walked two.
Centennial used three pitchers with starter Payton Strambler taking the loss. The senior worked 6.1 innings, giving up seven hits and three runs. He struck out nine and walked four.
Crowley scored its run in the seventh with one out on a fielder’s choice. With one out, the Eagles had back-to-back singles then picked up the go-ahead run on the fielder’s choice.
In the first, Crowley scored a pair of runs on a RBI-single by Martinez and run-scoring double by Flynn.
Centennial countered in the bottom of the inning by loading the bases with none out on singles by Miguel Santos, Adrian Gracia and Strambler. Santos stole home for the Spartans first run and Ethan Quintanilla’s sacrifice fly scored Gracia to tie the game at 2-2.
The Spartans (14-10-1, 5-4) fell at Cleburne, 2-1, Wednesday night. Centennial hosts Arlington Seguin tonight and plays Tuesday at Burleson.
